I coach a youth football team and plan on motioning backs out of the backfield, but want to make sure I don't get flagged for false start, or illegal motion when, say, a FB leaves his 3-point stance, and comes toward the line, before moving laterally toward the slot. What are the rules for RBs going in motion out of the backfield?Youth football teams generally follow NFHS rules (high school). So don't look at college, NFL or (for God's sake) CFL for clues.
First off, all players have to come absolutely set and motionless for one second sometime between the huddle and the snap. If two guys move at any one time, then all 11 have to be set for a full second again before the snap. If you chose to have one person in motion at the snap, be sure everyone was set before he starts moving. This will keep you from getting an illegal shift penalty.
His moving from a three point stance has to be smooth and not look like the start of a play. If it is the same or similar to the way he moves when the ball is snapped, then it's going to be a false start. This is solely in the opinion of the official who throws the flag. Some officials may gage it on whether the defense seems to be fooled by it. If they jump in reaction, expect a flag.
It is illegal motion if he is moving toward the line of scrimmage as the ball is snapped. It doesn't matter if he's moving mostly laterally if he is moving at all toward the line of scrimmage (even at an 89 degree angle) it's a foul.
One other thing. If you have an end go in motion (don't move a covered tight end, it's a false start), then he either needs to set for one second off the line or be at least five yards behind the ball when it is snapped. The same is not true for a slot receiver or a wideout who is not on the line to start. What are the rules for RBs going in motion out of the backfield?First off the running back can either shuffle or run sideways but must always stay parallel to the line of scrimmage. The rest of it will vary from league to league so if you plan on coaching you need to find out your league rules. What are the rules for RBs going in motion out of the backfield? You better tell them only one guy can go in motion at a time (except for a shift)
