ok i bought a motion light and it use's 3 wires white, black and green the wires coming from my house are only two wires white and black . what do i do ? can i hook up the white and black from the motion light both up to the same white wire from the house and use the black as a groundHow to hookup a motion light that has three wire hookup when i only have 2 wires?Black to black and white to white. The 3rd wire (green or bare) should go to a ground wire from the wall box. If you don't have a ground wire , attaching the green wire to the box is best.

Is the wall box steel or plastic? If plastic, don't bother. Just cap off the green wire with a wire nut or tape and fold it back into the wall box.

The green wire is extra protection and should be used, but if there is no place to go with it; you can't hook it up.

Homes built in the 60's and prior did not use a 3 wire circuit. No ground wire. Just black and white. They still work to this day, but the ground wire is a safer option. How to hookup a motion light that has three wire hookup when i only have 2 wires?Definitely not. Green is ground. White to white, black to black, green to a screw in the electrical box.How to hookup a motion light that has three wire hookup when i only have 2 wires?Color code to color code in this case and the bare or green wire if you have metal box you can attach it to that but it is not necessary because you do not have a grounded system. Many homes do not have grounds depending on where you live and what year the house was built. Grounded systems came out in the 50" s with some using a metal clad cable or A/C cable. Some of the older romex wires had a small ground wire much smaller then 14 gauge but it did serve the purpose. But in this case you are fine if you follow the color code.
